Effects
Anti-aging effect Aging animals accumulate a large amount of lipid peroxidation products in their bodies, accompanied by a decrease in superoxide dismutase activity. The experimental results showed that He Shou Wu could significantly reduce malondialdehyde content in brain and liver tissues of aged mice, increase monoamine transmitter content in brain and enhance SOD activity, and also significantly inhibit monoamine oxidase-B activity in brain and liver tissues of aged mice, thus eliminating damage to the body by free radicals and delaying the onset of aging and disease. According to the free radical theory, the generation and deposition of lipid peroxides can cause a series of aging symptoms, so the content of lipid peroxides is one of the main indicators for evaluating aging, and He Shou Wu extract has a very obvious inhibitory effect on the generation of lipid peroxides in mice skin, indicating that He Shou Wu has the effect of delaying skin aging and can be used as a good anti-aging cosmetic additive for skin. In addition, He Shou Wu can significantly improve the DNA damage repair ability of peripheral lymphocytes in aged rats, and affect the content of central neurotransmitters in the organism by inhibiting the activity of monoamine oxidase-B in the brain, thus regulating the central nervous activity and delaying the aging of the brain. Effects on the immune system Prepared He Shou Wu antagonizes the atrophic and degenerative effects of the thymus gland in mice induced by the immunosuppressants hydrocortisone or prednisolone, increases the weight of their thymus, adrenal gland, spleen and abdominal lymph nodes, increases the total number of white blood cells, promotes the phagocytosis of abdominal macrophages and reduces the content of circulating immune complexes in mice. Immunology believes that the decline of immune function is closely related to the aging of the body, and the thymus is the central organ of the immune system, which can effectively maintain the immune function of the body. The ability of He Shou Wu to delay the degeneration of the thymus gland that occurs with aging may be an important mechanism for its ability to delay aging and improve the immunity of the body. In addition, Polygonum officinale can increase thymus nucleic acid and protein content, delay age-related degenerative effects of thymus in aged rats, and promote significant reversal of ultrastructural changes in thymus of aged mice, resulting in a significant increase in phagocytosis index of mouse peritoneal macrophages, thus improving the non-specific immune function of the organism. Hypolipidemic and anti-atherosclerotic effects Experimental studies showed that the alcoholic extract of Radix et Rhizoma Polygonati 0.84-8.4g/kg-d administered by gavage significantly reduced the plasma triglyceride and free cholesterol levels and inhibited the increase of total plasma cholesterol and cholesterol ester in aged quail within 6 weeks. The aqueous extract of Polygonum officinale significantly increased the serum HDL cholesterol level and lowered TC level in mice, combined with a significant increase in HDL-C/TC ratio, suggesting that Polygonum officinale can improve the body's ability to operate and remove cholesterol, reduce blood lipid level and delay the development of atherosclerosis. The mechanism of the hypolipidemic effect of He Shou Wu is not yet clear and may be accomplished by one of the following pathways or synergistically: (1) the laxative effect of anthraquinone components, which accelerates the metabolism of toxic substances in the body and restores the fat metabolic pathway in the liver; (2) its effective effect on hepatic 3-hydroxy 3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase and Ta-hydroxylase activities, which inhibits endogenous cholesterol synthesis and promotes the conversion of cholesterol into bile acids, and inhibits bile acid reabsorption from the intestine and enhances bile acid excretion from the intestine; (3) it induces hepatic microsomal carboxylesterase, which promotes the hydrolysis process in vivo and accelerates the excretion of toxic substances in vivo related. There are several links in the development of atherosclerotic lesions, and smooth muscle cell proliferation is one of the important links. Experiments have shown that compound herbal medicines containing He Shou Wu can significantly inhibit the effect of aortic smooth muscle proliferation in cattle, and the effect of its single medicine is not as obvious as that of the group formula. Chen Wansheng et al. found that a new tetrahydroxystilbene glycoside component in Radix et Rhizoma Polygonati could inhibit platelet-derived growth factor-induced proliferation of calf vascular smooth muscle cells up to 50.6% at 10 -4 mol/L, which provided an experimental basis for the anti-atherosclerotic effect of Radix et Rhizoma Polygonati. Myocardial protective effect It was found that He Shou Wu extract had a preventive effect on myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury in dogs. The action link may be the function of stilbene glucoside and resveratrol glucoside in He Shou Wu to increase superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase activity. In addition, certain components of Radix Polygoni Multiflori such as anthraquinones and phospholipids have direct antioxidant effects and reduce oxygen free radicals in the body. Liver-protective effect The diosgenin component of Radix Polygoni Multiflori has a significant counteracting effect on fatty liver and liver function damage caused by peroxidized corn oil, increased liver lipid peroxidation, and elevated serum glutamic aminotransferase and glutamic oxalacetic aminotransferase in rats, as well as a significant decrease in serum free fatty acids and liver lipid peroxidation. In in vitro experiments, it can also inhibit lipid peroxidation in rat liver microsomes caused by adenosine diphosphate and reduced coenzyme, reducing hepatocyte damage and having good hepatoprotective effects. In addition, Radix Polygoni Multiflori is rich in lecithin, which can replenish or promote the synthesis of various liver diseases caused by reduced lecithin and prevent fatty liver and cholesterol deposition. The effect of he shou wu in increasing liver glycogen is also beneficial to the protection of the liver. Neuroprotective effects The main active ingredient in Radix Polygoni Multiflori: stilbene glycoside has a significant antagonistic effect on β-amyloid and hydrogen peroxide-induced decrease in neuronal cell survival and increase in lactate dehydrogenase leakage. The neuroprotective effect was enhanced with increasing dose. It is suggested that stilbene glycosides are useful in the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease and other degenerative diseases of the nervous system. The concentration-dependent inhibition of interleukin and nitric oxide production by Shou Wu extract exerts a neuroprotective effect. Antibacterial effects The aqueous decoction of different concoctions of Radix et Rhizoma Polygoni had different degrees of inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus albus, Bacillus fowleri, Bacillus sonnei, Bacillus typhi 901, Bacillus paratyphi, Bacillus diphtheriae, Streptococcus hemolyticus, and Bacillus naiveus. The inhibition ability of the aqueous decoction of Shou Wu and the aqueous decoction of Shou Wu steamed in groundnut juice against Staphylococcus aureus was better than that of the raw product and other concoction products. Other effects Radix et Rhizoma Polygonatum has adrenocorticotropic hormone-like effects. Radix et Rhizoma Polygonatum can significantly increase the liver glycogen content in mice starved of adrenal glands, significantly increase the weight of adrenal glands in mice and counteract the atrophy of thymus and adrenal glands induced by Radix et Rhizoma Chaihu and hydrocortisone. In addition, the anthraquinone derivatives contained in Polygonum officinale can promote intestinal peristalsis and have a mild laxative effect.
